How to Connect
With an Ethernet cable (available for free from your
College House computer lab), connect the network jack
on your computer with the network jack in the ResNet
box. If your ResNet box has more than one Ethernet jack,
select a jack that has a red label above it -- the red
label indicates that it is a "live" jack.
Turn on the computer -- in most cases, your connection
will be automatic.
If you cannot connect, there may be a misconfiguration
of network settings. (If your computer was earlier on
a non-Penn network, some of the settings may need to
be changed.) Follow these steps for Windows XP:
- Click "Start," and click "Control
Panel.
- Double-click "Network and Internet Connections."
- Double-click Network Connections.
- Right-click "Local Area Connections"
and select Properties.
- Select the General tab.
- Highlight "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)"
and click on Properties.
- Make sure "Obtain an IP Address Automatically"
is selected.
- Make sure "Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically"
is selected.
- Click OK.
- Click OK.
For Mac OS X, follow these steps:
- Click the Apple icon located on the
menu bar in the upper left corner of your desktop.
- Choose System Preferences
from
the pop-up list.
- Click on the Network control panel.
- From the Location: pop-up list, select New
Location
- In the Name your new location: field,
type the name of the PennNet connection you are configuring.
For example, type PennNet Ethernet. When you are finished,
click OK.
- From the Configure: pop-up list in
the top portion of the control panel, select Built-in
Ethernet.
- Click the TCP/IP tab.
- From the Configure: pop-up list in
the lower portion of the control panel, select Using
DHCP.
- Type upenn.edu in the Search Domains
field.
- Close the Network control panel. When
prompted to save, click Yes.
If you still cannot connect, please request
assistance from an ITA, or stop by the computer
lab in your College House and speak with the ITA on-duty.
