The ResNet project at the University of Pennsylvania began in 1993. Penn's residential
living spaces were wired for high-speed Ethernet, cable television and private phone lines.
The wiring was completed in 1996. Citing the need to offer structured and specialized
support for student residents, a pilot program began in Van Pelt College House. In 1997,
this program was expanded as Residential Computing, and implemented into the other College
Houses. In 1998, all undergraduate housing facilities were incorporated into the College
House program. Today College House Computing supports approximately 5,600 residents.
College House Computing has a staff of eight full-time professionals,
and coordinates with the eleven College Houses to hire a staff of approximately 24
student managers, and approximately 100 Information Technology Managers (ITAs). The
ITAs provide in-room computing support directly to residents who request help via a
website and also staff the computer labs within each College House.
